The DVD you are referring to may have been a PBS documentary. Other DVDs that might be current and helpful include "Food Matters," "Forks Over Knives," and "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead."

I loved every word. Thank you for writing this.

I've been enjoying a low-fat, raw Vegan lifestyle since mid-April. I've lost 40 pounds without exercise. I'm a long way from my goal, but I finally feel well enough to start exercising and get closer to the goal.

A very moving story. I hope I can meet this man someday and rub one of his pig's bellies. Honestly, I'm crying right now. Thanks for sharing.

Is that truly a reply from a monsanto rep above?

Does it really say, "we believe that no food should have labels because if the people find out it is bad for you, they will stop eating it, and we will lose billions that we enjoy today.????"
And does it really say,
"we believe that we are not responsible for health. we believe that health is the job of the FDA. we guarantee that the FDA will not consist of more than 3/4 of monsanto members?"
how about this: MONSANTO IS TRULY PURE EVIL

Wow.

So I think there is a great story in here. However the incredibly privileged tone of the author is so distracting. This kind of elitism, though eventually the author begins to see some "decency" in the "grunting" pig farmer, is famous for animal right folks.

As an animal rights activist and long time vegan let's not live up to out stereotypes.

way too focused on Greenspan. The most important component of the real estae meltdown was the government, mostly at the hands of liberals starting with FDR, then Carter et al, deciding that everyone should be able to enjoy the American Dream, home ownership. it got to the point of people qualifying for a loan using welfare checks. low interest rates encouraged buyers to only care about monthly payments rather than the actual cost of the home - fueling higher prices, then the fraud on wall street and the selling of sub-prime loans misrepresented to banks was the last straw. it had many components, the most importatn of which is the liberal idea that everyone deserved to be able to own a home - it was unrealistic and ultimately backfired bigtime. like your health advice but politically you sound like a lock step liberal.

Thank you so much for this wonderful story. I've just been made aware of it by Maggie a member of the Volentia vegan website.. Every experience good or bad is a gift, an opportunity to learn, gain insight and evolve. Both you and the pig farmer came together at exactly the right moment in time and were truly blessed!

I have been encouraged to research this topic by my partner Rev. Regie E. Greywolf who saw an expose on child slavery in July 2011. I have read this article and would like a current update as to how much of the legislative agreement that was supposed to be in effect by July 1, 2005 has come to pass. Where do we stand today? How about revisiting this subject (both chocolate and coffee) for 2011. Perhaps dateline would like to update us?. For now, we will be supporting the Fair Trade companies and doing our part to help abolish slave labor in all forms.

John, my brother-in-law,Raman, sent me your book years ago, and i keep it close by me...and ALWAYS carry it in my heart.I loved the story of the man passing the pig-stye, and pausing to visit with the pig...the visits meent more to the pig than the apples or berries offered. If only everyone recognized the precious pigs as loving, smart, playful beings...and not food! The way they are forced to suffer is unbearable! Thanks for sharing.
