Is that truly a reply from a monsanto rep above?

Does it really say, "we believe that no food should have labels because if the people find out it is bad for you, they will stop eating it, and we will lose billions that we enjoy today.????"
And does it really say,
"we believe that we are not responsible for health. we believe that health is the job of the FDA. we guarantee that the FDA will not consist of more than 3/4 of monsanto members?"
how about this: MONSANTO IS TRULY PURE EVIL

Interesting article and argument.

From my own experience, when I added tofu to my very successful 26 year mostly raw vegan diet, it would cause under eye edema, for a day or two, every time.

This was before they genetically engineered it.

Even organic soy is now contaminated with GMO, due to the all pervasive planting of subsidized soy.

Even if the GMO soy is not purposely designed to cause problems, or to reduce it's natural health benefits, if any, the fact that GMO crops are more heavily sprayed with poison that normal crops is reason enough, not to consume soy products.

Worse yet are the GMO crops that are designed to produce their own insecticide. If you look at page 14 in Bruce Lipton's Biology of Belief, it is clearly stated that GMO BT crops such as BT corn, affect the bowel flora of the person or animal consuming it, so that they begin to have this bug killer produced in their own body.

In my practice, I have seen tremendous weight loss in people who have done nothing more than eliminate soy, in all it's forms, corn, canola, agave and BPA from their diets.

Yes, I agree that further investigation is called for here.

I, too, am allergic to soy but can eat fermented soy. I have wanted to add tempeh occasionally to my diet but have backed off because the only brand available in my stores lists cultured soybean in the ingredients. I've noticed that when you research fermented/cultured food online, the writers are using fermented and cultured interchangeably which surprised me. I had always known fermented and cultured to be two different processes. Cultured to me is yogurt, buttermilk, etc.. Because I do know that the tofu available in the U. S. is not fermented, I do not eat it. But tempeh is always listed on the fermented soy list. Have the food manufacturers also found a way to get around the fermentation process with tempeh or am I just seeing a marketing choice of words?

Your talking all about adult soy consumption, with mix of other foods..Talk about babies on soy infant formula as 100% of dietary intake, it's frightening! Fetal, infant, and child exposure to soy is outrageous. Rarely is there a food without soy or soy fillers on the marketplace especially targeting children foods. Even the FDA includes, "Soybean, genistein, daidzein" on their "Poisonous Plant Database,".... without public disclosure.
For what the FDA knows and withholds about developmental soy toxicity read;
http://www.petition2congress.com/4607/petition-to-protect-children's health/
To submit fetus, infants and children to soy contamination is an undisclosed, undocumented developmental experiment.....and most frightening at that!

I am a huge John Robbins fan. I have been vegan for over 22 years. I consume some soy on a daily basis and so do my 3 boys. I was vegan thru each of my pregnancies and my boys are very healthy. One was a twin pregnancy and I carried them to term. They are all 7 and 5 now and very happy, healthy and smart. No weirdness with their private parts and I have had extensive blood work done in the last 6 months that proved I was as healthy as any 20 year old (I am 42).
I am glad that there is someone like John who has been a longtime vegan that can speak about this matter.
Thanks for the article!

I can't believe you left out natto. It is the only soy food I consume regularly now; once or twice a week. Miso and tamari are good too, but I get enough glutamate from other foods and rarely use them. If tempeh was palatable, I would eat it, but modern soy foods and ersatz meats I completely avoid. Nothing breaks a fast like a fritatta with natto, chard, and a bit of sesame oil and pepper sauce!

John I was very interested in what you had to say but
saddened with your opinion. NON GMO Fermented soy is
fine but other then that we should not be eating soy products.

'FDA scientist Official Letter of Protest to the FDA Letter of protest from researchers Daniel Doerge and Daniel Sheehan, two of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) key experts on soy, to the FDA, protesting the health claims approved by the FDA on soy products'

I have spent a tremendous amount of time researching all of this and here are my four conclusions:

First, moderation, as some have said above. No one should be eating 20 - 30% of their diet as soy (and certainly not above that!). Organic Brown Rice is the only thing that perhaps should play a large place in anyone's diet, as a high overall percentage week to week for many many years. Everything else should be rotated.

Second, get SprouTofu (Wildwood) which reduces the main chemicals in tofu that are bad via sprouting. Long term we have to get restaurants on that, which will be harder. They also make a few veggie burgers which are great. Event normal Tofu is fine in moderation (2, maybe 3 times a week?), but SprouTofu removes anything bad at all.

Third, if you like Soymilk, get Eden, they have added processes to remove anything unhelathy in SoyMilk. I've done the research, trust me.

Fourth, do keep Isolated Soy Protein to a minimum. My favorite Chinese (Taiwenese) vege restaurant has a ton of fake-meat stuff. It is amazing! Just keep that down to once every two weeks or so. Look for Isolated Soy Protein in other foods as well, it will be there hidden all over the place. This should be removed from our diets, and people are correct that it is bad for you in high dosages. Once a week, or once every two weeks is no big deal. I love going to that place, and will continue to! But total intake of any form of isolated soy protein and highly-processed soy products should be considered almost like a dessert, not a daily normal food.

as a child,i was raised on a meat and potatoes and finish everything on your plate, always have a processed sugar desert diet. as an adult i eat when im hungry and yes i give into my craveings.i naturally eat a mainly vegetarian diet-when i have a craveing for beef i will eat it-but i find i can only eat about 3oz before it becomes unappealing. i cant drink dairy but i still eat/drink little soy. i dont like the vanilla or plain soymilk and im not a big fan of chocolate as a whole but i do drink the chocolate soy milk when i feel the urge and i do eat fish and a little chicken when my body tells me i need to. i dont take vitamins and all of my boodtests come back wonderfully. i am over weight but even at that my blood presure and triglycerides/ cholesterol are low to normal and my good cholesterol is normal to high. i guess what im trying to say is we know for the most part what isnt healthy for us-fastfoods, high sugars, etc if we cut those out get more exercise and listen to our bodies not just with what we eat but how we live our lives, cuting down stress lvls, keeping our suroundings clean, etc.we as a race will be healthier and live longer reguardless of if we eat soy and how much. thank you.
